<h2>About</h2> Brume Wallet is an Ethereum wallet (for now), whose killer feature is a built-in implementation of the Tor protocol (the dark net), that makes all your network requests go through the Tor network, such that the people at the end of the pipe can't use your IP address to track you or censor you. By using traditional wallets, your IP address is sent to multiple third-party services, who often have access to your multiple wallet addresses too, so they can use this information to track you and your wallets, and/or censor your transactions. Brume Wallet prevents that, and does even more in terms of privacy and security. This project was launched at the privacy-centric EthBrno hackathon, 2022 edition. It won first place and the design award. Our team is made of two cypherpunks, Haz and Gabari, who both have a strong background in privacy and security <ul><li>Haz is a software engineer and pentester with an impressive GitHub profile, he found high and critical security vulnerabilities in protocols such as Tor, WalletConnect, TornadoCash, and in companies such as FleekHQ.</li></ul> <ul><li>Gabari has worked for several DAOs in the top-10 by market cap, and is now the Head of Marketing &amp; Communication at MangroveDAO, the First Programmable DEX.</li></ul> We believe privacy and security are the foundations of the crypto ecosystem, and that this should remain true, especially for the Ethereum ecosystem. The story is that we used multiple wallets and never found the right shoe in terms of privacy and security, so we decided to make our own. This project allows us to make privacy and security important again, with a scheme we like to call "zero-cost privacy", that is, privacy with almost no cost for the user in terms of UX and features. We already almost achieved feature-parity with existing wallets such as MetaMask, but with the added privacy and security. For example, we fixed the privacy and security of Ledger and WalletConnect by making our own implementation of these protocols for our wallet, such that there is no privacy leak possible and no security backdoor. All our work is fully open-source, MIT licensed, and reproducible. And we will soon provide a best-effort distribution system by publishing the hashes of the builds to IPFS and Ethereum. We refused several proposals from VCs and investors, just to make sure we keep aligned with our users, you. And this is why we need your help to keep building this project. If our project succeeds, we will for sure deliver you some merch too :). <h2>The future</h2> The funds will help us deliver both our main project (the wallet), and our side-projects (see below), by paying all the developers, pentesters and auditors that will help make this project possible, and by having a marketing budget that will help us spread the word of privacy and security. If our project fails, we will try to refund contributors with the remaining funds if possible, or donate the remaining funds to charities that support public goods for privacy and security. Main project We plan to keep building the wallet by improving privacy and security even more, adding unseen features, and making the best UX possible, whether you're a newbie or an advanced user. We also plan to publish a mobile app to the App Store (iOS) and Play Store (Android), and publish the Safari extension to the App Store too. This might be delivered in Q4 2023. In terms of unseen features, we plan to add on-chain privacy with protocols such as Railgun, Aztec, or zkBob, that allow private transactions. No date for now. And for achieving feature-parity with MetaMask, we will build Brume Snaps, a way to extend the functionalities of Brume Wallet, but with maximum security, as well as a marketplace for the snaps. No date for now. We may also add Bitcoin and Monero support if it's feasible ;). Side-projects Our first side-project is to build WebTor, a second network to scale the Tor network, by allowing browsers (and Brume users) to share their bandwidth in exchange for tokens. It's not a new mixnet, it will rely on the stable and secure foundations of the Tor network. We might start to work on this in Q1 2024, and deliver in Q2 2024. Our second side-project is to build a marketplace for uncensorable dapps running through the Tor network. Where any dapp could be downloaded locally on your computer or your phone, and everything that requires a network connection will go through the Tor network, all with maximum security and privacy, and the best possible UX. We might start to work on this in Q2 2024 and deliver in Q3 2024. <h2>Risks &amp; challenges</h2> The Tor network One of the big risks you may think of is the Tor network, but the Tor network is almost 20 years old, it's a very stable foundation that passed the Lindy test of time. The number of nodes is still increasing and the attacks are really hard if not impossible. Even in the worst scenario, where the Tor network is completely circumvented, our wallet would still be more private and secure than traditional ones. And since we plan to improve the Tor network, by building WebTor and by continuing to contribute to Tor (we already fixed some security bugs in there), the future will be even brighter. Our projects We succeeded in all the technical challenges we faced, and we believe the hardest work is behind us. We already reimplemented several protocols, fixed their security, and made them more private, with better performances. And it works incredibly well! We almost achieved feature-parity with traditional wallets. But it's not all over, we are still committed to building the best possible UX while still maintaining our "zero-cost privacy". This is a big challenge, many traditional wallets struggle to build a good UX, and they don't even have the same privacy and security constraints as our wallet. Our side-projects are meant to complete the work on our main project, they will need time, money, and neurons too. They may or may not succeed as well as our main project, and this is a big challenge for us, as we are going through the No Man's Land of uncertainty, where only the craziest people go.
