The aim for the mark was to help redefine the Green Dot into its own distinct and recognizable mark, and help it depart from its misconception to mean recycling. I still made use of simple circular shapes to depict universality. The break in shape helps place emphasis on the center of the mark, being a negative space for the dot, whereas creating two arrow-like shapes joined together to meaning financial transactions and contributions on one side and the resulting recovery of waste on the other side.

Running from March 2021 – April 2022, the brief inspired more than 200 symbols from 165 from agencies and designers across the world.

Since 1970, arrows chasing in a cycle has meant recycle or recycled. In 1990, The Green Dot adopted the same graphic motif, with a completely different meaning. We believe this has to change.⁠

The Green Dot symbol is used by over 150,000 companies, appearing on 400 billion packages every year and is regularly confused with the recycling symbol. However, it merely means the company or brand has made a financial contribution towards a recycling system or cause, and does not mean their product is recyclable or recycled.⁠

The Green Dot is not fit for purpose. Change the symbol. Change the system.⁠

Our Instagram Exhibition “Why Design?” is finished! 
We published 99 answers to the question Why Design from design people of different countries, ages, positions, and experiences united by the love to #design.

Students and tutors, freelancers and independent designers, type and product designers, creative and art directors from BBDO Worldwide, design people from Arrival, Rarible, Miro, Semrush, OSOME, Sketchar ▋, and great independent design studios such as ESH gruppa, humbleteam, Creative Mules , SETTERS, Embacy and many others.

More than five months of work, almost 200 deep and insightful answers, 830 followers on Instagram, and five posters in the creative hubs of the world. That is just a small part of what happened.
