Mango is a love letter to the Gujarati script. The modern Gujarati typographic script is modeled after the Devanagari script, which was originally written using a bamboo or reed pen and utilizes the same pen angle. Mango is heavily influenced by the writing origin of the Gujarati script, as well as the typographic traditions of early digital Gujarati typefaces. However, its design, particularly for vertical conjuncts, is not limited by the same technological constraints.
Mango Latin is a reverse-contrast (or horizontal contrast) serif designed to complement the contrast and angle of the Gujarati script. This typeface works best for small to medium text, but can also be effective at display sizes.
Fonts for South Asian, Brahmi-based writing systems require larger glyph sets than the Latin script, including conjunct forms and matra alternates to typeset basic texts. Existing Gujarati fonts typically employ half-consonants (half-forms) as a 'catch-all' solution to represent multi-consonant combinations, but this can often result in inharmonious connections. To address this issue, v0.1 of Mango only activates half-consonants for a curated set of combinations based on the needs of basic Gujarati text. Unsupported combinations are displayed with an explicit Virama (or Halanta). Mango is the first digital Gujarati typeface to include this mechanism.
v0.1 includes the Regular weight in both Gujarati and Latin. Mango will be expanded into a full family.

Mango is the typeface I started designing during the MATD program under the guidance of Fiona Ross from 2019–2020.
